'The Great Gatsby' Leads Australian Academy Honors NominationsCITAZIONEThe Baz Luhrmann film gets 14 noms, including for stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, Aussie Oscar hopeful "The Rocket" scores 10 noms, and Jane Campion's "Top of the Lake" leads the TV nominees.
Baz Luhrmann's rollicking reinterpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic The Great Gatsby leads the nominees for the third annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) honors, scoring a total of 14 nominations in virtually all categories, including best film and best director.
Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan both picked up best acting nominations, while Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki and Isla Fisher all scooped nominations in the supporting actor and actress categories, respectively.
On the other end of the scale from Luhrmann's big budget, star-studded 3D spectacle is The Rocket. Kim Mordaunt's Laotian-language drama is Australia's entry for the 2014 best foreign language Oscar race. It picked up 10 AACTA noms, including ones for lead actor Sitthiphon Disamoe and supporting noms for Thep Phongam and Alice Keohavong.
Another multiple nominee is the omnibus project The Turning, a series of short films adapted from the works of Australian writer Tim Winton. In addition to a best film nom, the project's multiple directors, which include Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto and Rose Byrne, picked up a collective best directing nomination. In addition, both Weaving and Byrne were nominated in the lead acting categories.
Other best film nominees include Satellite Boy from Catriona McKenzie, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this year, Ivan Sen's Outback crime drama Mystery Road and Tony Krawitz' Greece-set drama Dead Europe.
Veteran director Jane Campion's mysterious miniseries Top of the Lake, starring Holly Hunter and Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, led the small-screen pack, receiving 10 AACTA nominations. The U.K.-Australian co-production, which airs on the Sundance Channel in the U.S., was shot entirely on location in New Zealand.
The 3rd AACTA Awards will be presented at a gala event on Jan. 28 at the the Star Event Centre in Sydney.. -
