It's 1955. Frank and April Wheeler, in the seventh year of their marriage, have fallen into a life that appears to most as being perfect. They live in the Connecticut suburbs with two young children. Frank commutes to New York City where he works in an office job while April stays at home as a housewife. But they're not happy. April has forgone her dream of becoming an actress, and Frank hates his job - one where he places little effort - although he has never figured out what his passion in life is. One day, April suggests that they move to Paris - a city where Frank visited during the war and loved, but where April has never been - as a means to rejuvenate their life. April's plan: she would be the breadwinner, getting a lucrative secretarial job for one of the major international organizations, while Frank would have free time to find himself and whatever his passion. Initially skeptical, Frank ultimately agrees to April's plan. There is also news of the casting of fellow Titanic alumni Kathy Bates. It will be good to see Bates with another role, and we know what she can do with supporting work (steal the film) and I wouldn’t be surprised if she found herself up for Oscar nomination number four in 2009. (Beloved veteran actor…check)
Set in 1955 (period costume…check), the novel focuses on the hopes and aspirations of Frank and April Wheeler, self-assured Connecticut suburbanites who see themselves as very different from their neighbours in the Revolutionary Hill Estates in which they have just moved. (American setting…check)
April Wheeler (Kate Winslet), with her thespian ambitions and her plans to move to Paris, is doomed, ultimately, to failure. (actor, playing actor…check) Her fantasies about Parisian life are the more absurd for being supported by her belief that her husband is fluent in French but he knows the language hardly at all, he once drunkenly boasted about his proficiency. (Suffering wife...check...the Academy loves this type of role more than any other)
Frank Wheeler's (Leonardo DiCaprio) sense of his lawless masculinity coexists with his bland acceptance of a futile corporation job. To cope with his failings he often drinks too much and finds himself engaging in an affair with a co-worker. The narrative details the day-to-day lives of this couple and their concerns for their future. (drug dependency and extra marital affair…check)
Basically it will be pretty tough for this to fail in all aspects. The Academy are going to be looking at rewarding both DiCaprio and Winslet, and this looks like it could be the one to do it.

E' arrivata anche la notizia che tra il cast ci sarà la loro vecchia amica in Titanic, Kathy Bates.
Sarà bello vederla interpretare un altro ruolo, e sappiamo ciò che può fare con un semplice ruolo di sostegno (perfino rubare la scena)...non sarei sorpreso se ricevesse la sua quarta nomination all'Oscar nel 2009 (amata attrice veterana...c'è).
Ambientato nel 1955 (costume d'epoca...c'è), il romanzo si concentra sulle speranze e le aspettative di Frank e April Wheeler, abitanti di un sobborgo del Connecticut, sicuri di sè, due persone che si vedono molto diverse rispetto ai loro vicini nei Revolutionary Hill Estates dove si sono appena trasferiti (ambientazione americana...c'è).
April Wheeler (Kate Winslet), con le sue ambizioni recitative e i suoi progetti di trasferirsi a Parigi, ultimamente è condannata al fallimento (attore, recitazione...c'è). Le sue fantasie sulla vita parigina sono ancora più assurde perchè accompagnate dalla convinzione che il marito parli francese fluentemente: in realtà lo conosce a pena, anche se una volta, da ubriaco, vantava la sua abilità nella lingua (moglie sofferente...c'è...l'accademia ama questo tipo di ruolo più di ogi altro).
Lo sfrenato senso di mascolinità di Frank Wheeler (Leonardo Di Caprio), coesiste con la sua blanda accettazione di un futile lavoro in una società. Per far fronte ai suoi fallimenti, spesso beve troppo, e si ritrova coinvolto in una relazione con una collega (dipendenza da droghe, relazione extra-matrimoniale...c'è).
La narrazione espone minuziosamente, giorno per giorno, la vita di questa coppia e le loro preoccupazioni per il futuro.
Sarà assolutamente difficile che questo film fallisca. L'Accademia penserà a premiare sia DiCaprio che la Winslet, e sembra che questa sia la volta buona.
