tGZxIS6 “The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Blake Lively, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson Rumored for 'Great Gatsby'
The three actresses, along with Keira Knightley and Abbie Cornish, are added to the shortlist of female lead which already includes Amanda Seyfried and Natalie Portman.

"Moulin Rouge!" helmer Baz Luhrmann is eying great talents for "The Great Gatsby", his movie adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel of the same title. After reportedly considering Rebecca Hall for the part of Daisy Buchanan, the Aussie filmmaker is reportedly expanding his search that it now includes Blake Lively, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley and Abbie Cornish.

According to Deadline Hollywood, these names are added to the shortlist and joining Hall, Amanda Seyfried and Natalie Portman. As for Hall, she reportedly has read for the female lead role when Luhrmann did a workshop of the screenplay he wrote with Craig Pearce.

"The Great Gatsby", set up at Sony Pictures Entertainment, is said as a possible vehicle for Luhrmann though he has not officially signed up for the directing duty. He and Sony want Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire to star in the film, with the former reading Jay Gatsby and the latter reading Nick Carraway.

The novel itself is a critique of the American Dream pictured in Gatsby's rise to glory and eventual fall from grace. The story also follows the love life of Gatsby and Daisy. Daisy marries the brutal, bullying, but extremely rich Tom Buchanan while Gatsby serves overseas and he is determined to get her back after the war ends.

Short List for 'Gatsby's Daisy Not So Short

The bits of casting news we've gotten for Baz Luhrmann's planned adaptation of The Great Gatsby have been small in number but large in scale. A few weeks ago it was reported that the director staged one of his usual workshop/read-throughs with Academy Award Nominee Leonardo DiCaprio in the titular role, Golden Globe Nominee Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and current "it girl" Rebecca Hall as Daisy.

We'd heard about DiCaprio and Maguire in those roles for a while now, but Hall was new to the scene. And it looks like Luhrmann may not be sold on what he saw of her in the workshop as a few more names were thrown into the mix today in the form of a "short" list that included Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman.

This list seems to be more of a wish list than a short list as it's chalk full of stars who have the words "scheduling conflict" written all of them. That being said, if DiCaprio and Maguire can make time for Baz Luhrmann I'm sure any of the actresses listed above can make the time as well.

As far as the list itself goes, while I'm a fan of some of the actresses more than others, I think everyone on that list has shown in at least one of their performances that if chosen they could take on this role. But if I was forced to pick one I'd have to go with Williams. She's got the physical traits to embody Daisy as well as the acting chops to back it up. Plus, she's already worked extremely well with DiCaprio in the past, so if he actually does play Gatsby I'm sure he'll give her a solid reference.

So, who might be playing Daisy Buchanan in Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby?

We are hearing through web rumours, that originated over at Deadline, that director Baz Luhrmann is looking at a number of actresses to play the role of Daisy Buchanan in his planned movie THE GREAT GATSBY.

Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and Scarlett Johansson are all mentioned to be being considered for the role, which sees the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio playing Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire playing Nick Carraway. Those two recently completed a reading for the Aussie director, along with Rebecca Hall who read for Daisy, the word at the trade is that Luhrmann is considering the other said actresses listed above.

THE GREAT GATSBY is based on the novel by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, adapted for the screen by Luhrmann and collaborator Craig Pearce.

The film is housed at Sony Pictures.

Baz Luhrmann Wants Every Actress Ever for The Great Gatsby

Apologies to Rachel McAdams and…um, that’s about it. According to Deadline, Baz Luhrmann has “shortened” his list of potential Daisy Buchanan’s in The Great Gatsby to the following actresses: Rebecca Hall, Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. Luhrmann will attempt to get as many of these leading ladies as he can to read opposite Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) and Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) over the next two weeks. If it were me, I’d pick Michelle Williams — what about you? [Deadline]

EXCLUSIVE: Director Baz Luhrmann is expanding his search for Daisy Buchanan as he moves closer to committing to The Great Gatsby as his next film. Deadline revealed recently that Luhrmann did a workshop of the screenplay he wrote with Craig Pearce, with Leonardo DiCaprio reading Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire reading Nick Carraway, and The Town's Rebecca Hall reading Daisy Buchanan. Luhrmann wants those guys to star, but he's casting a wider net on Daisy. I'm told that Hall is in the running, but that he's got a bunch of actresses and wants to see how they read with DiCaprio. Luhrmann likes to work shop his scripts, and this should play out over the next two weeks, in New York. This might be hard for some of the actresses, who are shooting movies abroad. Among the names I've heard on Baz's list: Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams and Scarlett Johansson. Aside from those names, I've heard that Luhrmann is also sweet on Natalie Portman, the Black Swan star who is in wide demand and recently was courted for Gravity and then dropped out of Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, a role for which Lionsgate likes Johansson and Bradley Cooper. Daisy was played in the last film by Mia Farrow, and I thought she was a bit flighty and delicate and not as manipulative as she was in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel. The film is set up at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
